| Step 1: Get Comfortable
Sit on your bed or favorite chair. Placing a pillow on your back might help you relax, it can also be use to place under baby to help raise baby to breast level. You might also find that placing your feet in a stool or coffee table helpful.
Step 2: Baby's position
Baby should be facing your breast. Baby's head and shoulders should be supported by your forearm.
Step 3: Starting to Breastfeed
Hold your breast with your fingers surrounding the areola ( dark part of breast). Place baby's mouth against nipple. Brush his lips against your nipple or finger baby will open mouth wide, then pull baby closer and get him or her to latch on the breast. Most or all of the areola should be covered by baby's mouth.
Other important information:
At first your breast release a yellow substance called " colostrum". It might not seem much but it's actually perfect for your baby. Try feeding baby frequently until milk "kicks in". Remember frequent feeding helps to keep the milk flow strong and avoids "engorgement", so breastfeed as often as baby likes for 10 - 20 minutes on each breast or until breast feels empty.
